About
Work

S—I (Sound, then Image) is an interactive audiovisual installation that generates real-time sound compositions and visual artefacts through individual participation. As the consequent work of the master’s dissertation Acoustic Mirrors – From Sound to Tangibility, it extends the research into auditory spatialization and algorithmic sound creation. S—I builds on the principles of the early 20th-century British Acoustic Mirrors, concrete structures designed to detect distant sounds, and reimagines them through contemporary computational processes. The experience unfolds in two stages: an initial experimentation phase, where the participant explores and learns the mechanics of the installation, followed by an execution stage that challenges their auditory memory and perceptual abilities. The installation creates an immersive environment where sound is the sole navigational and expressive element. All audio compositions are generated through custom-built synthesisers. The experience is evaluated phenomenologically, examining how participants listen, remember, and orient themselves through sound alone.
